City of Portsmouth, NH DPW Hosts Cate Street Bridge Project Public Information Session on October 20, 2026

PORTSMOUTH – The City of Portsmouth Department of Public Works will hold a Public Information Session on the Cate Street Bridge Project on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at 6:30 pm at the Portsmouth Senior Activity Center, located at 125 Cottage Street. City staff and the project team will provide an overview and updates on the project, followed by an opportunity for questions from the public.
The 2018 Portsmouth Citywide Bridge Evaluation determined that the Cate Street Bridge is beyond its 50-year design life, cannot handle heavy truck loads and needs to be replaced. The New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) Bridge Inspection Report rates the bridge deck a 2, or “critical”; the superstructure a 5, or “fair”; and the substructure a 6, or “satisfactory.”
In August 2025, the City Council authorized bonding the replacement project rather than risking failure while awaiting State funding. The bonding also supports the match required for the NHDOT Local Project Administrator (LPA) and Federal funding secured for this project.
This is a hybrid meeting held in-person and via Zoom. Members of the public who wish to participate by Zoom must register in advance. After registering, participants will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting.
