Production Manager / Assistant Technical Director
The Production Manager / Assistant Technical Director (PM/ATD) ensures the smooth, efficient operation of all theatre productions. Rooted in kindness, collaboration, and problem-solving, this role supports the full production lifecycle — from early planning and rehearsal logistics through performances — and being part of the hands-on crew during critical moments such as load-ins, technical rehearsals, performances, and strike.
The PM / ATD serves as the primary producer once a production opens and also supports the planning and delivery of special events.
Responsibilities
Production Logistics & Coordination
• Serve as a primary point of contact between the Players’ Ring as producing house and directors, designers, cast, and crew, ensuring open communication and smooth workflow.
• Create and maintain the theatre production calendar, coordinating schedules for auditions, rehearsals, production meetings, photo calls, technical runs, performances, and other show-related activities.
• Manage all required production documentation, including contracts, W-9s, schedules, and marketing assets.
• Attend production meetings and key rehearsals as a consistent producer’s representative, proactively identifying and addressing logistical, technical, or personnel needs with the support of the Executive Director and Technical Director. This includes reviewing rehearsal and performance reports and independently following up on action
items to ensure timely resolution.
• Connect designers with resources, including community partnerships, in-kind sponsorships, and donations.
• Once a production opens, serve as the primary producer for the show, addressing day-to-
day needs that may emerge.
Technical & Event Support
• Support the Technical Director during load-ins, technical rehearsals, strikes, and venue resets for all productions.
• Provide Technical support for special events and rentals.
• Coordinate with TD for additional overhire/volunteer support as needed.
Administrative Duties
• Ensure accurate and timely production information relevant to Front of House and Marketing Relations.
• Identify ways to improve production processes and workflows.
Qualifications & Requirements
• Minimum 2 years of proven experience in production management, technical theater, or a closely related theatrical role.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence, with a relationship-centered approach to collaboration.
• Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail; able to manage multiple timelines, priorities, and personalities simultaneously.
• Ability to communicate complex concepts and instructions clearly and kindly across departments.
• Basic working knowledge of theatrical construction, tools, and lighting/sound technology, with curiosity and willingness to continue learning.
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including lifting and moving production materials up to 50lbs, navigating stairs, and remaining active and on-site during long production days.
• Sense of humor, patience, radical kindness, and joy in collaborative theatre-making.
Position Details
• This is a salaried position that reports to the Executive Director but works closely with both the Executive Director and the Technical Director.
• Compensation $16,000 annually.
• In addition to base compensation, the Ring commits to offering additional paid design, crew, or production opportunities—based on interest and production needs—for up to an additional $3,000 annually, should the PM/ATD wish to accept them.
• This role averages approximately 15/17 hours per week, with workload fluctuating throughout the season. Hours may increase during peak production periods and decrease during slower months (particularly mid-summer). This work does not follow traditional office hours. Weekly hours are flexible and are shaped by the rhythm of the season and production needs. Our team holds great value in work/life balance and actively pursues
means of maintaining that balance.
