  • Seacoast Science Center Appoints Kate Leavitt as Executive Director

Leavitt set to strengthen Center’s position as a regional connector for coastal science, conservation, and climate resilience

April 9, 2025 – Odiorne Point State Park, Rye, NH – Seacoast Science Center (SSC) is thrilled to announce the appointment of Kate Leavitt as its new executive director. A dedicated leader with over two decades of experience at SSC, Kate brings a deep commitment to science education, conservation, and public engagement that will propel the Center into an exciting new chapter.

Kate has played an integral role in shaping SSC’s mission and impact, most recently serving as deputy director. Her leadership has helped bridge the gap between research and public understanding, transforming complex science into compelling, hands-on experiences that inspire curiosity, connection, and action.

“Science doesn’t exist in isolation, and neither does conservation,” said Leavitt. "At SSC, we create immersive experiences that foster personal connections to nature—an essential first step in cultivating care, empathy, and inspiring responsibility and action. I am honored to lead our team at a time when our work is more critical than ever. Together, we will continue to inspire and engage people of all ages."

As executive director, Kate is committed to strengthening SSC’s role as a regional connector for coastal science, conservation, and climate resilience using Odiorne Point State Park as a hands-on interpretive location. Under her leadership, SSC will expand its efforts to bring scientific storytelling to life through interactive exhibits, nature-based programming, real-world data collection, and responsible recreation activities, all designed to inspire a sense of stewardship of Odiorne Point State Park and our ocean and coastal environments.

Kate holds a Bachelor of Science in Marine and Freshwater Biology from the University of New Hampshire and a Master of Arts in Biology from Miami University. She has built strong partnerships across the Seacoast region, serving in leadership roles on various boards and collaborating with scientists to translate research into engaging educational programs. Her work has been instrumental in positioning SSC as a hub for experiential learning and conservation action.

“Under Kate’s leadership, Seacoast Science Center will continue to thrive as a place where people of all ages connect with the natural world in meaningful ways,” said Richard Dumore, chair of SSC’s Board of Directors. “She brings a remarkable blend of strategic thinking, scientific expertise, and a deep passion for our coastal environment—making her the ideal person to lead the Center’s next chapter.”

In partnership with NH Division of Parks and Recreation, SSC serves as a gateway and a steward for Odiorne Point State Park. SSC is a vital resource for interpreting, sharing, and protecting coastal and marine ecosystems at the Park. In addition to its hands-on programs, interactive exhibits, and engaging public events, SSC acts as a strong advocate for the Park, welcoming thousands of visitors each year to explore the natural beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities in the Park. By connecting people to nature, both inside the Center and out on the trails, SSC fosters discovery, deepens environmental awareness and inspires action. Under Kate’s guidance, SSC is poised to build on its legacy, ensuring future generations have the knowledge, experiences, and passion to protect our planet.
