PORTSMOUTH – Oil paintings by New Hampshire Art Association artist Marybeth Patterson will be exhibited in a show titled, “Welcome to Goose Pond,” during the month of October at the NHAA’s Robert Lincoln Levy Gallery.

“Goose Pond is the place that has been the one constant in my life,” Patterson said. “I hope my oil paintings convey my sense of childlike wonder, whimsy and intense color I remember from my time growing up there.”

In 1934 Patterson’s grandfather bought an old farmhouse on a New Hampshire lake, sight unseen. Her father spent his summers there and when he was older, brought his family there.

“Goose Pond has always been a magical place for all of us,” Patterson said. “Growing up in Long Island, New York, time spent at the lake house made it feel like I was in a different world. The colors were brighter, the smells rich with the earth and forest, and the blue skies went on forever.”

As a child, Patterson imagined fairies and woodland creatures hiding around every corner, and perhaps ghosts.

“Surely there were ghosts in that old house,” she recalled. “Welcome to Goose Pond, where nothing is quite as it seems. I never met my grandfather, but he changed my life forever. Thanks, Grandpa.”

Patterson received a degree in graphic design in 1996, but it was drawing and painting that inspired her most. When living in Charleston, South Carolina, she took numerous workshops, was accepted into a few juried exhibits and sold several paintings.

After moving to Enfield several years ago, she revived her passion for oil painting and became a juried member of the NHAA in 2020.

Visitors to the gallery are currently being asked to wear a mask due to the prevalence of COVID-19. However, if visitors are more comfortable setting up a time to view the exhibit by appointment outside of gallery hours, they can call 603-431-4230.
